School Band Competition
An
exciting new feature, "The Sonny Bradshaw School Band Competition" was added to the International Jamaica Ocho Rios Jazz Festival starting in 1999.
School bands island wide are invited to show their musical skills in preparing
three selections including a Duke Ellington composition, a Jamaica Ska piece and
a Ballad.
Each band will be judged by a Musician's Panel, with the final
judging to be done during "Jazz Week". "This is our way of contributing
to the musical education of our young," says Sonny Bradshaw organiser of
the Festival and the Competition. "We have to encourage them to research
a wide range of music to ensure that the music lives on," he added.
Other rules of the competition are that bands must be comprised
of not less than five music students and have at least two wind instruments.
